A heavenly stem, Chinese 天干 tiān gàn, is part of the Chinese calendar existing of repeating pairs of the ten heavenly stems and the twelve earth branches. The heavenly stems represent respectively the yin and yang aspect of the five elements. The ten heavenly stems are also found on the Chinese compass (luopan) and each reprents a cerain compass direction. See also Chinese Calendar
